VENTNOR The city, in conjunction with Colliers Engineering & Design Co., will be hosting a public information session 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20 at Ventnor City Hall, 6201 Atlantic Ave. The purpose of the meeting is to educate the public about planned improvements to five signalized intersections along Ventnor Avenue in the North Beach area.
According to Mayor Lance Landgraf, the improvements are similar to improvements being made by Atlantic County along the county portion of the roadway further south, and are designed to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety at intersections and support Ventnor's future transportation network. Colliers Engineering is the same company that designed improvements being conducted by the county, Landgraf said.
There are five intersections in the North Beach area that will be upgraded to include new traffic lights, poles and improvements to the four corners that will provide better handicapped access, he said. One of the five intersections will include traffic controls for a deaf and blind person who lives in the area.
After they are installed, the traffic lights will be timed to synchronize with the smart traffic lights being installed along the county portion of Ventnor Avenue, Landgraf said.
The improvements will upgrade the city-owned portion of Ventnor Avenue at Oxford, Victoria, Weymouth, Nashville and Baton Rouge avenues.
The new traffic lights will tie-in with the lights the county is installing, the mayor said.
The $2.3 million signalization project is being funded with two grants secured through the South Jersey Transportation Planning Organization for the NJ Department of Transportation Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality program, and will reduce congestion and emissions through traffic signal optimization, intelligent transportation system development and pedestrian improvements.
Landgraf said information about the project, which will likely not start until fall, will be shared with members of the community at the meeting.
The meeting will include a presentation on the project and concept plans. Comment boards will be available for public feedback.
