MARGATE Friends and family of the late Walter Ed Vizthum are using a game he loved to benefit his alma mater.
The inaugural Drink n' Shoes Horseshoe Tournament will be held Saturday, July 14 followed by a beef and beer at the Margate Log Cabin, 600 N. Jerome Ave. The event benefits the Walter Ed Vizthum Scholarship Fund, which was created by his friends and family to honor his legacy.
Vizthum's heart gave out on on Aug. 28, 2017 when he was 32-years-old. The Absecon native left behind newborn twin girls and a deep hole in the hearts of his many friends and family members, according to a press release about the event.
The scholarship fund was created to provide assistance to incoming freshmen at Holy Spirit High School beginning with the 2019-2020 school year. Scholarships will be awarded based on financial need, academic merit, an essay contest and letter of recommendation.
Ed loved playing horseshoes as much as he loved going to and playing football at Holy Spirit High School, said event organizer Shaun Smith of Ventnor. He would have been 33 on July 10 this year and it's also been 15 years since we graduated from Spirit. This seemed like a great way to get everyone together to celebrate a good man that we lost too soon.
The tournament begins at 10 a.m. Cost is $40 per player and $75 for teams of two and includes a T-shirt and beef and beer beginning at noon. Registration is required in advance at vizfund.org. Tickets to the beef and beer are $25 including food and entertainment. The rain date is Sunday, July 15.
The Schroeder Law Group in Hammonton, The Cove in Brigantine, Colmar True Value Home Center in Margate and Sparkable in Atlantic City are sponsoring the event. Additional sponsorships are welcome.
