Longport holds annual open house at Historical Museum

  • Longport

The Longport Historical Society held its annual open house Friday, June 29 to welcome the summer season of visitors to the Longport Historical Museum, which is housed in a former 1939 U.S. Coast Guard Station.

The building, which is on the National and New Jersey Historic Registers, housed Borough Hall for more than 40 years, and is located next door to what was once the Betty Bacharach rehabilitation hospital for children.

The museum houses eight themed rooms with artifacts depicting the first families of Longport, police and fire departments, historic homes and hotels. There's a room dedicated to the ocean, Beach Patrol and rum runners, the Betty Bacharach home, destructive storms, and has a map and reference room.

Not to be missed is the Port Store, which sells T-shirts, sweatshirts, artwork, car magnets and more.

On Friday, the society offered trays of roasted vegetables, cheeses, cookies and desserts to those who stopped by to learn more about the borough and its history.

The museum, which is located at 2305 Atlantic Ave., is open 9 a.m. to noon every Saturday during summer.
