MARGATE - Are you and your family members safe at night in the event of a fire? Margate Fire Chief Dan Adams suggests you watch this video to decide if you and your children would be safer sleeping with the bedroom door opened or closed.

According to Adams, 40 years ago, you had 17 minutes to get out of your house in the event of a fire. In the old days, furniture was made of wood and cotton. But with today's furniture materials and drapes made of polyester and other highly flammable synthetic materials, today you have just three minutes to escape a fire.

Many parents believe they should leave the bedroom doors open just in case their children wake up from a bad dream or need to use the potty during the night. But this video might change your mind in the event of a fire.

The parents in this video changed their sleeping routines...You decide...
