Organ restoration committee offers free recital, holiday organ tour at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall

  • Atlantic City

ATLANTIC CITY The holiday season will continue Monday, Dec. 30 with a special Curator's Tour and free recital at historic Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall on the Midmer-Losh pipe organthe world's largest musical instrument ever built with 33,112 pipes.

The Curator's Tour will begin at 10 a.m. in the lobby as you begin your journey through Boardwalk Hall and learn about its history and architecture. You will be guided through two of the large organ chambers as you discover the amazing technology used in the pipe organ that began its development more than 90 years ago. You will get up close to see the seven-keyboard console that the organist uses to control the 150 tons of equipment and create memorable musical experiences.

The organs at Boardwalk Hall are in the process of being restored to their original grandeur of the 1930s. As you tour the restoration shop, you will meet members of the Historic Organ Restoration Committee as they work diligently to bring more of the instrument back to life

The Curator's Tour will be followed by a free organ recital at noon on the Midmer-Losh pipe organ. The joy of the season will continue as you listen to the sounds of this magnificent instrument.

These free recitals are made possible by funds from the Atlantic County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
