Atlantic County Police Training Academy moves to Atlantic Cape's Mays Landing campus

  • Atlantic County

The Atlantic County Police Training Academy, operated by Atlantic County's Department of Public Safety, will relocate from the Canale Training Center in Egg Harbor Township to the Atlantic Cape Community College Mays Landing campus, Building T. The move was unanimously approved by the Atlantic County Board of Freeholders on Jan. 29.

The relocation of the Police Training Academy to Atlantic Cape had previously been discussed and officials believe it is now time to turn this idea into reality, according to a release.

Our Police Training Academy has been very successful. With this move, participants will now have greater access to academic services and resources, Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson said. This partnership should prove very beneficial to both the Academy and Atlantic Cape.

The academy provides various types of training including a police recruit class for those who aspire to be police officers. Additionally, the academy provides sworn officers with in-service training so they have the opportunity to enhance existing skills and knowledge and learn best practices in law enforcement for career advancement.

The academy will use the Atlantic Cape gymnasium for physical training when the recruit classes are in session and the county pistol range for recruit firearms training.

We are excited to welcome the Police Training Academy to our Mays Landing Campus," Atlantic Atlantic Cape President Barbara Gaba said. "This collaboration will be beneficial for all involved and provide easier access to further educational opportunities. We offer a variety of specialized Criminal Justice degree programs right here in Mays Landing.

Graduates of a New Jersey police academy may be eligible for college credits toward the criminal justice associate in science degree at Atlantic Cape.  The college offers four academic career tracks that have been developed to accommodate specific academic and career paths: corrections, policing, law enforcement technologies and homeland security.  Students may also complete their bachelor of science degree at Rutgers University that is conveniently located on Atlantic Cape's Mays Landing campus.
