Downbeach towns have traditionally allowed grilling on the beach for the 4th of July holiday and this year is no exception. However, Margate officials are cautioning residents about grilling safety at home this summer. July is the peak month for grill fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association.
Margate Fire Chief Dan Adams said the department has responded to several house fires in recent years caused by grilling too close to the house. He distributed a grilling safety flyer at the last Board of Commissioners meeting, stating the grill should be placed well away from the home, deck and out from under eaves overhanging tree branches.
Never leave a grill unattended, and keep children and pets away from the area, he advised.
Residents should also be sure their propane grill is in good condition before lighting it. Check the gas tank hose for leaks the first time it is used. If you smell gas while cooking, leave the area and call the fire department.
If the flame should go out while cooking, turn the grill off and wait at least five minutes before relighting it.
