MARGATE Nearly 50 years after Woodstock, city employees will be participating in Foodstock the week of July 7-12. There's still time for the public to participate in Margate's quest to feed the hungry, and food can be dropped off at the Municipal Building, 9001 Winchester Ave. before Friday, July 12.
Foodstock is a grassroots effort to help those struggling with food insecurity due to economic conditions.
The effort started in 2010 in Freehold when a senior at St. John Vianney High School needed a senior project. Maura Swisher and her family had a long history of supporting a local food pantry, so she organized a neighborhood food drive and collected 2,000 pounds of food to stock empty shelves.
Since then, the organization adopted a variation on a theme Peace, Love and Food and has collected hundreds of thousands of pounds of food and raised tens of thousands of dollars for area food pantries.
Food collected will be picked up by the Community FoodBank of New Jersey Southern Branch at noon on Friday, July 12. Donations must be received before then. Most needed items are peanut butter, jellies and jams, rice, beans, oatmeal, pasta, canned vegetables and fruits, stews, chili, granola bars, dried fruits, oils, pancake mix, syrup and shelf-stable milk.
