Swimmers take off during last year's Capt. Turner Memorial Swim.

LONGPORT - The Longport Lifeguard Association will host the Capt. Jim Turner Memorial Swim 6:30 p.m. Saturday, July 27 on the beach at 33rd Avenue in front of Beach Patrol Headquarters.

The Longport Beach Patrol is setting the course, which will be a half-mile ocean swim in a box type pattern ideal for first-time ocean swimmers.

The registration fee is $20. Awards will be presented to the top finisher in each male and female age group. T shirts and towels will be available for purchase.

Registration opens at 5:30 p.m. at Beach Patrol Headquarters. Delmo Sports will officiate the race. All swimmers will receive an ankle bracelet that automatically register time and place of finish.

Doug Farrell, a retired podiatrist who summers in Longport and is currently living with multiple myeloma, took on the task of raising money to help find a cure for blood cancers.

Proceeds of the event will help the International Myeloma Foundation find a cure, Farrell said.

Multiple myeloma is an incurable blood cancer which has greatly benefitted from new treatment and research.  Farrell believes that in addition to raising funds, it is equally important to raise awareness in the fight against this cancer.

It is not only a swim event, but a community event that reaches out to raise donations for research and support for people with multiple myeloma, Farrell said.

All donations should be made out to the International Myeloma Foundation and sent to Doug Farrell at 16 S. 32nd Ave., Longport, N.J. 08403.
