MARGATE The Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association awarded its annual O'Hara-McCormick Memorial Scholarships to four Margate students who have excelled in academics and are headed to universities in the fall.

Firefighter Brian Duffey, president of FMBA Local 41, presented the $1,000 scholarships Thursday, June 20 during the Margate Board of Commissioners meeting.

Duffey said it was one of the best years for applications considering the impressive resumes of the students, who represent four area high schools.

Recipients are Jake LaMonaca, a Holy Spirit High School graduate who is headed the University of Delaware to study exercise science; Taryn Headley, a graduate of Our Lady of Mercy Academy, who will be going to Sacred Heart University to study nursing; Shane Ferry, an Ocean City High School graduate who will be going to Florida Institute of Technology to study aerospace engineering; and Mackenzie Smith, an Atlantic City High School graduate who is going to University of Pennsylvania to study business at Wharton School of Business.

Duffey said the scholarships would not have been made possible without the generous support of the Margate community.
