Northfield Councilwoman Susan M. Korngut announced today her candidacy for Atlantic County executive.

"County government has been stuck in 'cruise control' for too long," Korngut said. "We need to make bold moves to improve the lives of our residents."

Korngut, a Democrat, is challenging Republican incumbent Dennis Levinson for the post.

"It's time for new leadership to tackle the problems we face head-on, from growing our economy to combating income inequality to protecting our most vulnerable citizens. I will stand up for all of us including those who feel our voices are not being heard. It's time to change the game," she said in a release.

Korngut, an attorney, was elected to City Council in 2017. During her time in elected office, Korngut has promoted the diversity of Northfield and fought to preserve the quality of life for all residents. She has upended "politics as usual" and pushed for relief for already-burdened taxpayers, according to the release.

"Anyone who has ever stepped into court with me knows I have never been one to make peace with the status quo. As a practicing attorney for more than 20 years, I know how to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves. Every single day, I get to stand up for the underdog, the bullied, the voiceless. I have brought that fight with me to Northfield City Council and I will bring it with me as your county executive. It is time to inject a sense of urgency and purpose into the office of Atlantic County executive," she said.

Korngut is a graduate of The American University and Dickinson School of Law. She is a family law attorney and owns her own legal practice in Northfield. Korngut previously served on the board of Court Appointed Special Advocates and has been active in organizing events to highlight women in politics, survivors of sexual assault, and civil rights icons. She was born and raised in Atlantic County.

Korngut will seek the Democratic nomination for Atlantic County executive at the 44th annual Atlantic County Democratic Convention being held Sunday, March 24 at the Golden Nugget in Atlantic City.
