  • Downbeach

Help rescue the terrapins Saturday, May 11 on the Margate causeway.

MARGATE - The Margate Terrapin Rescue Project will hold its annual Barrier Installation Day staring 8 a.m. Saturday, May 11 at the Margate Causeway Maintenance Yard.

It is a family-friendly event. Children over the age of 8 are welcomed to help clean the habitats and roadside areas as well as install new sections of barriers that prevent the terrapins from entering the roadway.

Volunteers are needed to repair the existing split tubing installed along most sections of the causeway and install or replace any damaged or missing split tubing, repair entire sections of whole tubing and replace or repair wired fencing on the guardrails.

The effort is an important one to ensure the terrapins are kept out of harm's way.

Corrugated half-pipe prevents terrapins from getting onto the Margate causeway.

Organizers recommend wearing bright colors, long sleeves and pants to protect against poison ivy, ticks and biting insects, and bring work or garden gloves.

Kline Construction will provide equipment and traffic control.

Mark any tools you bring with masking tape or duct tape and put your name, phone number, email address on the tool in case they are lost.

Bring equipment such as spade shovels, trench shovels, power drills, with extra batteries and attachments, mallets, hack saws, sawzalls and shears.

Park on the dirt turn around area in the maintenance yard before driving to the designated work stations.

Volunteers are required to sign a release and liability waiver before they start working. Download the form and bring it with you.
