Longport seeks volunteers for semi-annual beach sweep

  • Longport

LONGPORT The borough is seeking volunteers to participate in the Clean Ocean Action Beach Sweep being held 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26.

Volunteers of all ages can participate. Participants can pick up supplies at the Longport Community Building located at 33rd and Atlantic avenues before heading out to the beach to pick up any trash and debris that has made its way onto the beach.

Last year's statewide beach sweep collected nearly a half-million pieces of trash and debris in 60 locations across the state.

The beach sweep is held rain or shine. Volunteers are asked to dress for the weather, wear closed shoes and sunscreen.

Clean Ocean Action will compile data about the results of the sweep and use it to determine the sources of pollution, monitor trends and promote solutions. Data is shared with legislators to develop laws that reduce the amount of waste that enters the ocean.

According to the organizartion's website, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy used COA data about cigarette filters found on the beach to help pass the statewide beach smoking ban.
