Downbeach residents asked to conserve water after sewer leak discharges sewage into bay

  • Downbeach

ATLANTIC CITY Residents and businesses in Downbeach area are being asked to conserve water to minimize flow of water through a broken force main discharging into the bay near Bader Field.

The Atlantic City Office of Emergency Management was notified Sunday morning that a leak in a 30-inch main sewer line was discovered on the Bader Field site closest to Route 40/Albany Avenue.

The sewer line services the Longport, Margate, and Ventnor communities, as well as the Chelsea Heights section of Atlantic City and Seaview Harbor in Egg Harbor Township.

The city is working with the Atlantic County Utilities Authority and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to ensure the safety of the community and waterways, according to a release posted on the Atlantic City Police Department's Facebook page.

Residents and businesses located in the affected areas are requested to conserve water to help alleviate and minimize the flow of water through the force main.

Atlantic City and the ACUA are actively working to notify local marinas, bait and tackle shops and private dock owners about the leak.

ACUA contactors have responded and a plan has been developed to repair the leak.

Arthur R. Henry Inc. Contractors and Engineers began installation of a bypass system on Monday, April 20.

The bypass will contain and redirect the flow so the force main can be repaired.

ACUA had a similar leak in September 2017 after which the ACUA completed a design to replace the entire line and was set to advertise for bids upon receiving NJDEP approvals. Approvals were expected to be received next month.

According to a release from the ACUA, the ACUA will invoke the ultimate repair as set forth in the design plans currently under review.

Although the area is closed for shellfishing, anglers use the are for recreation.

The ACUA is working with local officials to notify marinas, tackle shops and private dock owners.
