Stockton offers free Holocaust workshop for educators

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP - The Yad Vashem International School for Holocaust Studies in Israel and the Sara and Sam Schoffer Holocaust Resource Center at Stockton University will present the third annual Wally and Lutz Hammerschlag Summer Educator Seminar via Zoom Aug. 17-20.

This year's theme is: Live from Jerusalem via Zoom - In the Age of Digital Learning: Teaching about the Holocaust through Art, Photography, Literature, Film and More.

The seminar designed for educators of grades 5-12 and college and will teach about the history of the Holocaust using the arts to connect with the past to make a better future for all. Strategies and resources will be shared.

The seminar event's presenters will include:


  • Liz Elzby, art educator and graduate of Bezalel Academy of Arts & Design, Jerusalem

  • Lori Gerson, educator at Yad Vashem

  • Jackie Metzger, retired educator at Yad Vashem School for International Studies

  • Sheryl Ochayon, educator at Yad Vashem and Echoes & Reflections Project Director

  • Robert Rozett, senior historian at Yad Vashem

  • Stockton University Holocaust & Genocide Studies faculty and staff


Some of the topics include: how to teach about the Holocaust using well-known icons, using art to effectively teach the Holocaust, the use of photography through the lens of the victims and the perpetrators, the use of poetry to achieve a student connection to history, the use of films via digital learning and how to remember the past to ensure a better future.

The program will run from 9 a.m. to noon each day. Educators can register for one, two, three, or for all four days. The cost is free to educators and New Jersey educators can also receive professional development hours.
