Margate cancels New Year's Eve fireworks display

  • Margate

MARGATE - After careful of Gov. Murphy's Executive Orders regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and advice from Atlantic County Office of Emergency Management, the city is sadly canceling its planned New Year's Eve fireworks display, Fire Chief Dan Adams said today.

The city normally has fireworks on the 4th of July, but the show was canceled due to the pandemic. City officials were hopeful they would be able to provide a fireworks display on New Year's Eve, but after discussions with Adams, Police Chief Matthew Hankinson and other public safety officials, the city is canceling its planned Dec. 31 celebration.

"We feel that there is too much information advising us to not move forward with the show," Adams said in an email to the commissioners. "With that said, we feel it is the best interest of the City of Margate, its residents and visitors to cancel the fireworks show for Dec. 31."

The city will instead start planning for the July 4, 2021 show, Adams said.

He said the city would forfeit half of its original deposit, but the remaining balance of the budgeted amount will be applied toward the deposit for the 2021 show.

"This equates to a loss of $ 3,937.50 for the City of Margate," he said.

Residents area advised to celebrate the holidays responsibly and safely.
