Atlantic County has reported that four males, ranging in age from 31 to 76 years, have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases in Atlantic County to 18 as of Saturday, March 28. One patient is hospitalized while three are recovering at home.
The statewide total of positives is now 11,124 with 140 deaths after 2,289 new cases and 32 new deaths were confirmed Saturday.
Of the 29,882 New Jersey residents who have been tested, 10,436 or 35% were positive. Officials believe it may be less than three weeks before the state reaches a peak number of cases. They are preparing for a surge in hospitalizations by mid-April.
The state has prioritized testing for individuals who are sick with symptoms of fever, cough and shortness of breath and need hospitalization, those who are close contacts of confirmed COVID-19 cases, and individuals who have traveled to or from highly affected areas. Healthcare workers and first responders also receive top priority for testing.
Testing is not recommended for those who do not have symptoms.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, symptoms may appear between 2 and 14 days after exposure to the COVID-19 virus. There is currently no vaccine or medications approved to treat the disease. Supportive care is the recommended treatment at this time.
Individuals who experience mild symptoms, such as a fever, dry cough and some aches and pains, should stay home to rest and recover.
