Let it grow, let it grow.

Along with the cooler weather, early November also sprouts whiskers, and by the end of the month, bearded police officers will have achieved an admirable goal supporting cancer patients who often lose their hair during treatment.

All three Downbeach police departments are participating in No Shave November, which over the last decade has become an annual tradition to raise money for each department's cancer charity of choice, while allowing officers to go unshaven for a whole month. Even female officers participate by donating funds to support their bearded counterparts.

No Shave November, now a national campaign, has raised more than $10 million in the fight against cancer.

According to Ventnor Police, one in six deaths are a result of cancer and chances are you know and love someone who has been affected by this dreaded disease. Nevertheless, great strides have been made in early detection and treatment. It is important to know that many cancers are preventable, so No Shave November has raised awareness and money for research and treatment.

With each whisker grown, we work to embrace our hair by honoring those that have lost theirs during cancer treatment, states the Ventnor Police Department's pledge page.

Margate Police Chief Matthew Hankinson and Margate City PBA Local 65 announced that Margate Police officers will participate by raising funds for the AtlantiCare cancer health network.

Last year, PBA Local 65 was the top fund raiser for AtlantiCare's "Treasure the Moment Fund." The fund benefits local patients battling cancer by helping them deal with medical bills.

With our assistance, the patients can focus on healing, instead of worrying about financial burdens, Hankinson said on the department's Facebook page.

Not to be outdone, officers of the Longport Police Department are growing our hair during the entire month of November to also benefit AtlantiCare's Treasure the Moment Fund.

Founded in 1977, the AtlantiCare Foundation provides financial resources that build healthy communities.
