Downbeach towns plan 9/11 memorial ceremonies

DOWNBEACH - Local first responders will hold their annual tribute ceremonies on Friday, Sept. 11 in memory of the impactful events on Sept. 11, 2001 in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pa. This year marks the 19th anniversary of the day that changed America.

Longport

American Legion Post 469 is planning to hold a brief, but meaningful service 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11 at Thomas B. Reed Park at the foot of the Longport Bridge.

The public is invited to attend. Social distancing protocols apply.

Margate

This year's event will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11 in the parking lot at the rear of the Eugene A. Tighe Middle School on Monmouth Avenue. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremony was moved from the Margate City Firehouse No. 1 on Washington Avenue to the school to allow students to participate.

The service will last approximately 25 minutes and include prayer by local clergy, music tributes, participation by Tighe School eighth grade class and comments by local dignitaries.

The public is welcome to attend, but are requested to stay on the sidewalk side of the schoolyard fence.

Ventnor

Ventnor City first responders will join their counterparts in Atlantic City for the annual Saracini-O'Neill 9/11 Memorial Ceremony held at 10 a.m., Sept. 11 at the city's border with Atlantic City at Jackson Avenue and the Boardwalk. The event is handicapped accessible and includes the Atlantic City Fire Department Sandpipers Pipes and Drums, patriotic songs and special guest speakers.

Holy Trinity Parish Rosary Society will hold a 9/11 rosary service 6 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Shrine of the Blessed Mother at St. James Church, 6415 Atlantic Ave., Ventnor. All are welcome to pray the rosary in memory of all those who perished on Sept. 11, 2001.
