Downbeach is gearing up for the 2020 Pat Erdman Memorial Atlantic County Surf Fishing Derby being held on Absecon Island beaches Sept. 21-Nov. 22.
The derby has been part of local anglers' fall fishing routine for more than 40 years. Beaches in Atlantic City, Ventnor and Margate will be open to registered anglers and their 4WD vehicles. Beach driving permits must be obtained from the municipality and anglers should be aware that each municipality has its own vehicle permit process.
Atlantic City permit applications must be made and returned via email. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no walk-ins will be allowed. Vehicle permits can also be obtained at Ventnor City Hall and the Margate City Police Department.
Driving on the beach is a privilege and participants are requested to tred lightly to protect the environment. Local police and members of the derby organizing committee will be patrolling the beaches to ensure compliance. Any speeding violations or dangerous driving may result in the immediate revocation of beach driving permits.
Anglers will be provided with instructions on how to obtain vehicle passes and contest rules and regulations when they register for the Derby at participating bait and tackle shops.
Surf Fishing Derby registration fee is $25 with all proceeds going toward prizes and donations to the PBAs of participating municipalities.
Registration forms will be available 10 days in advance at the following B&T shops:
