Longport swimmers get ready to start the Capt. Turner Memorial Swim.
The Longport Lifeguard Association will host its annual Capt. Turner Memorial Swim 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15 on the beach near Beach Patrol Headquarters, 33rd and Atlantic avenues.
The swim is named after Jim Turner who was in the U.S. Coast Guard and personally saved men from a fishing boat that was sinking off Atlantic City. He later became captain of the Longport Beach Patrol and did much to instill a high quality of life saving ability in the members of his team.
Swimmers take off during a previous Capt. Turner Memorial Swim.
The event has a long history of involving the community and raising funds for the International Myeloma Foundation.
Douglas Farrell, a retired podiatrist who has been living with multiple myeloma for several years, has teamed up with the Longport Lifeguard Association for this year's event.
The public is invited to cheer on the swimmers and help raise money for the cause.
Donations can be made to the I.M.F. c/o Dr. Doug Farrell, 16 S. 32nd Ave. Longport, NJ 08403.
Doug Farrell of Longport has penned a children's book that teaches valuable life lessons. He also raises money for victims of multiple myeloma through the Longport Beach Patrol Capt. Turner Memorial Swim each year.
