LONGPORT - The rabbits have had their day in the sun, now it's time to bring on the birds, Longport green team leader Tom Subranni said.

Sustainable Longport will present a second summer educational program, For the Birds, 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24 at Longport Borough Hall, 2305 Atlantic Ave. The green team's last program featured what residents can do to maintain their gardens amid a proliferation of voracious rabbits.

Longport resident Kai K. Tripician, president of Wesleyan University's Birding Club, will present the program, which will share information about the birds that are native to the southern tip of Absecon Island.

I have always admired birds, even from a very young age, Tripician said. However, my earliest memory of an event that drove me towards a path of birding was when I attended a birthday party in fourth grade and noticed a soaring bird I couldn't identify. After many unanswered questions, I ran to the library the next day and took out a birders' field guide. I was enamored by the images, descriptions, and the many possible adventures I could have. This set me on the path towards ornithology.

Tripician, a sophomore at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., is a National Honor Society student who starting the birding club on campus to foster an appreciation and curiosity of birds. Members share photographs, attend birdwatching trips and maintain bird feeders.

During the presentation, participants will learn about the sea, land and bay birds that inhabit the island.
