LONGPORT - Popo Flanigan, one of six girls born and raised in Philadelphia, is this month's featured artist at the Longport Public Library Art Gallery.

Flanigan always wanted to go to art school, but her dad believed a career in art was not the sensible thing to do. He wanted her to learn how to transcribe to ensure she would always find work. After college, she started taking night classes at the Philadelphia College of Art and never looked back.

Her career included owning a fine jewelry shop, Popo Designs of Flourtown, Pa. While her shop was operating, she closed in summers while she pursued traveling to Italy and France to take classes in painting, sgraffito and frescos. When she retired and sold the business in 2006, she finally began her second career as a painter.

Her paintings will be on display in the art gallery throughout the month of July.

The library, located at 2305 Atlantic Ave., is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.
