MARGATE The annual Margate City Fire Department's annual Open House for children is back this year after last year's event had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The event will be held 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 30 in a parking lot at the Margate City Public Library, 8100 Atlantic Ave., between Huntington and Granville avenues.

The event is always a treat for the city's children, but it's also a learning experience that teaches fire safety concepts, such as drop and roll, crawl under the smoke and teaches very young children not to fear firefighters in their safety gear.

"It's a great night for the kids, it's a great night for the families. Everybody can enjoy the night and meet our firefighters and actually see the equipment we have that people really don't understand all the different things we do have that really help us to protect them and provide a great service, Chief Dan Adams said.

The event includes live demonstrations, food, music, giveaways and lots of fun. Children will have the opportunity to try on protective gear, try their hand at the water cannon and climb aboard various apparatus, including the rescue boat, fire engine and ambulance.

Margate City Fire Chief Dan Adams shares some basic fire safety tips with children at the department's annual open house at the library.
