VENTNOR - Downbeach residents and visitors gathered at the end of the Ventnor Fishing Pier Friday morning to marvel at the size and power of the waves in the ocean.

Wave heights are up to 8 feet as a result of Hurricane Larry, an enormous storm that is traveling up the North Atlantic this weekend and will likely make landfall in Newfoundland on Sunday.

Ventnor fishers watch the waves generated by Hurricane Larry.

Although area surfers may have discovered Nirvana, swimmers should refrain from swimming in the ocean due to the fierceness of the waves and the likelihood of life-threatening rip currents.

Area beach patrols have limited staffing at this time and are limiting bathing to knee height.

Be cautious, learn how to protect yourself in a rip current.
