Bayfest exhibits include a walk through a giant inflatable colon

Bayfest will be held in Somers Point, Saturday, April 30.

SOMERS POINT  Shore Medical Center, ScreenNJ and the Cape Atlantic Coalition for Health are offering the community a unique opportunity to tour a 12-foot inflatable colon at Somers Point Bayfest being held starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 30 along Bay Avenue.

The city expects more than 30,000 residents and visitors to flock to this year's Bayfest, which offers fun for all ages. For the kids, Bayfest features contests, pony rides, face painting and inflatables, strolling entertainers and a rock climbing wall. Grownups will enjoy browsing more than 100 unique crafter booths and listening to live music at different locations throughout the event. When it's time to refuel, 45 of the region's most popular food vendors will be on hand to tempt festival goers with their culinary creations.

One of the most unique exhibits includes Shore Medical Center's giant inflatable colon that is designed to show what healthy and unhealthy colorectal tissue looks like. The exhibit will make colorectal cancer and colorectal health fun and interesting, and encourage people to get their colonoscopies. The colon will be set up on the hospital lawn on Bay Avenue. Everyone who tours the tunnel will get a special giveaway.

In the United States, 60-70 million people are affected by digestive disorders like chronic constipation, diverticular disease and irritable bowel syndrome according to the National Institute of Health. Another 145,000 people are estimated to be diagnosed with colorectal cancer this year, the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women.
