Children of the Ross School Choir performed to an SRO audience, Friday, Dec. 9, 2022.
LONGPORT - It was the children of the community who made the Borough's annual Holiday Tree and Menorah Lighting extra special this year. The children's choir from the William H. Ross Elementary School performed their first holiday concert in Longport since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Library Director Ricky Gerhardt welcomed the packed audience in Commission Chambers and said it was the largest crowd ever for the annual event, this year sponsored by the Longport Public Library and Library Board. The last time the children's choir performed in Longport was two years ago, he said.
Santa arrived promptly at 6 p.m. aboard the Longport Fire Department's ladder truck. He walked from the parking lot to the center gazebo of the bayfront park and counted down to light the holiday tree and menorah.
The chill in the air that signals the coming of winter forced families inside where the children entertained to a standing-room-only crowd of parents, grandparents, residents and visitors.
Before the concert, children and adults took pictures with Santa, and enjoyed culinary delights from the sweet table.
