MARGATE The Margate City Fire Department held its annual Open House Monday, July 18 behind the city's public library. The event was originally scheduled for June 22 but had to be rescheduled due to inclement weather.

The group of children was smaller in number, but ready to tackle the challenging tasks requested by Fire Chief Dan Adams. Many of the children were already knowledgeable of fire safety and readily performed when requested to do so.

Adams said this year's fire prevention theme is, Fire won't wait. Plan your escape. Every family should have a pre-determined escape route and meeting place in case of a fire at home, he said.

First up in the demonstration was Firefighter Newell fully dressed in firefighting gear.

This is what a firefighter will look like if they come to your house for a fire, Adams said. Don't be afraid and do not hide. Run to the firefighter because they are there to help you.

Adams then pressed the button to release the shrill sound that emanates from common household smoke detectors.

Some of them sound different, and you need to know what your smoke alarm sounds like so you can get out quickly, he said.

Some smoke detectors are voice activated and say, Fire, fire, fire. Evacuate immediately, he said.

Once out of the building, go to the family's pre-determined meeting place, he told the children.

That's so we know everyone is safe, he said.

Then, it's time to call 911, he said.

We only call 911 if there is an emergency, he instructed.

Firefighters assisted Adams with the Crawl low below the smoke exercise, which included a heavy grey blanket representing the smoke. Children crawled under the blanket and some even helped their friends get out from under the smoke.

Two children were eager to demonstrate how to Stop, drop and roll, the technique that's used if clothing catches fire.

After the brief presentation, children were encouraged to check out the fire trucks, ambulance and wave runner on display in the parking lot.

Perhaps the most fun of the night came as children tried their hand at quirting the firehose at a little white building with red flames on the roof. Firefighters assisted as the wind blew back some of the water coming out of the hose, giving those in line some much needed refreshment from the heat of the day.

Everyone enjoyed hot dogs and treats provided by members of the Margate City Fire Department.
