EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP The Atlantic County Clean Communities Program administered by the Atlantic County Utilities Authority celebrated the hard work of dedicated Adopt-A-Road volunteers at a dinner on Wednesday, June 1.
More than 100 volunteers who regularly collect litter along county roads, parks and schoolyards were in attendance. Groups that completed at least four litter cleanups throughout the year were recognized and awarded a $200 mini-grant for their dedicated time.
Litter is hazardous to the health of residents and wildlife. Picking up litter protects the environment and keeps our roads, parks and schoolyards beautiful, Atlantic County Clean Communities Coordinator Rebecca Turygan said. We want to show our appreciation for the volunteers who dedicate their time to keep our communities clean.
In 2021, volunteers participating in the Atlantic County program performed 318 cleanups and removed 1,007 bags of litter, 675 bags of recycling and 24 tires from area roadways, parks and school yards. A total of 371 miles were cleaned.
Winners of the 2021 Summer Litter Challenge were also recognized at the event. The two-week challenge took place during the month of August and encouraged teams to pick up as much litter as they could. The top three teams that collected the most litter were also awarded mini-grants for their dedication. The teams that placed first, second and third place were Absecon Community Affairs, Ford Beautification project and C&R Appliance of Galloway Township respectively.
