Ventnor was incorporated as a city on March 17, 1903 after separating from Egg Harbor Township. It got its name from the widow of S. Bartram Richards who suggested the name after visiting the English seaside resort on the Isle of Wight. The first governing meeting was held a month later at the Carisbrooke Inn, near City Hall, which also took its name from a place on the Isle of Wight.
