Longport to hold Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony

LONGPORT American Legion Post 569 will be honoring members of the military who died defending the nation Memorial Day, Monday, May 30. Memorial Day is a day to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice that makes it possible for all Americans to enjoy the unofficial start of the summer season at the shore.

The American flag will fly at half-mast until noon when it will be raised to full-staff so that Americans can celebrate the freedoms they enjoy because of their sacrifices.

The day starts with a parade at 11 a.m. followed by a ceremony in Thomas B. Reed Park near the Longport bridge at 11:30 a.m.. Military guest speaker at the ceremony will be the Legion's 2021 Wounded Warrior Week recipient U.S. Army Major Todd Berrios.

Lineup for the parade will start at 10:45 a.m. at 33rd and Atlantic avenues. The parade route marches along 34th Avenue to Ventnor Avenue and then to the park at 28th and Oberon avenues.

Children and adults are encouraged to dress in patriotic colors, decorate their bicycles and strollers and march in the parade. Those with young children should line up along the bay side of Ventnor Avenue where Young Patriots will hand out small American flags to the children.
