VENTNOR The Ventnor City Beach Patrol will hold signups for this summer's Junior Lifeguard Program online beginning May 20 or in person at the temporary Beach Patrol Headquarters on the boardwalk at Suffolk Avenue during the month of June.
The Junior Lifeguard program is designed to educate children about beach and ocean safety, promote solid interpersonal relationships, build teamwork and introduce them to the skills needed to become a lifeguard. Participants will meet at a designated area, start with team stretch, warm-up run and break into rotating stations.
The program this year includes two, three-day age group sessions, 10:30 a.m. to noon: Tuesday through Friday, July 5-8 for ages 5-9, Monday through Thursday, July 11-14 for ages 10-14. On the fourth day of each group, July 8 and 14, participants will compete in a beach run, surf dash and beach flags, followed by a barbeque.
Teens ages 13-17 who are interested in becoming a lifeguard, learning more about ocean skills and safety, or experience what it's like to be a lifeguard can attend the new Lifeguard Explorer Program 10:15 a.m. to noon Saturday through Tuesday, July 16-19.
Participants will get first hand experiences on the real life, everyday duties of a lifeguard, learn how to do rescues using can buoys, surf boats and paddleboards. They will learn some of the techniques lifeguards use to keep swimmers safe.
Cost for all program sessions is $15 per child and includes a Junior Lifeguard T-shirt.
