VENTNOR - Stockton University faculty and staff will explore topics such as Jews in film, women and Jewish law and the music of brotherhood in a yearlong lecture series hosted by Shirat Hayam Synagogue, 700 N. Swarthmore Ave.
All lectures are free, open to the public, and begin at 7:30 p.m. Question-and-answer sessions will follow.
Shirat Hayam is thrilled to transition our Salute to Stockton' educational summer series into a yearlong event, Shirat Hayam Reform Spiritual Leader Jaqueline Menaker said. We are particularly happy to carry on the tradition established by Rabbi Gordon Geller and the former Congregation Emeth Shalom as it evolves during its 25th year. On behalf of our committee and Series Chair, Barbara Slovak, we look forward to welcoming the entire community to Shirat Hayam for a quality array of inspiring and diverse educational programs.
The series schedule is as follows:
Nov. 12 Professor of Music Beverly Vaughn and selected members of the Stockton Oratorio Society will present, Through It All, an uplifting evening of music featuring African American spirituals and selected songs celebrating brotherhood, peace and hope.
Jan. 21, 2023 Gail Rosenthal, director of the Sara & Sam Schoffer Holocaust Resource Center at Stockton, will present the Holocaust Survivors of South Jersey Project, which features the life stories of Holocaust survivors in our local communities.
March 11, 2023 Steven Marcus, adjunct instructor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies, will discuss Jews in Film. He will examine the contributions of Jews to American film, a topic he explores in greater detail during his semester-long class at Stockton.
April 15, 2023 Marcia Fiedler, assistant professor of Jewish studies at Stockton, will speak on Women and Jewish Law.
This is the 25th year Stockton and Shirat Hayam have partnered to bring educational lectures to the community. Each program will be followed by a brief Havdalah service which separates the Jewish sabbath from the rest of the week.
