Information about stroke to be presented at Linwood Country Club

Provided/Shore Physicians Group neurologist Dr. Ralf Van der Sluis will discuss stroke causes, symptoms and treatment at a May 16 breakfast event at Linwood Country Club.

SOMERS POINT - Shore Physicians Group will hold a free community education breakfast on stroke awareness and prevention 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, May 16 at Linwood Country Club, 500 Shore Road in Linwood. The event is part of Shore Physicians Group's Be Well Connected health education series.

Guests will enjoy a light breakfast and presentations from SPG neurologist Dr. Ralf Van der Sluis, who will discuss the causes, symptoms and treatment of stroke, and Michelle Sellers, RN, DNP, SCRN, who serves as director of the University of Pennsylvania Health System NeuroRescue Program. Sellers will discuss how stroke affects women.

Van der Sluis joined Shore Physicians Group's Neurology Division in January 2023. He is board certified in neurology, clinical neurophysiology and sleep medicine. He has decades of experience in private neurology practice in Northeastern Pennsylvania, where he also cared for stroke patients at two primary stroke center hospitals.

Michelle Sellers, RN, DNP, SCRN, director of the NeuroRescue Program for the University of Pennsylvania Health System, will discuss stroke in women.

While  Van der Sluis specializes in epilepsy, neuromuscular disorders and sleep medicine, he also has extensive experience treating patients with headaches, memory issues, degenerative disease of the central nervous system, and cerebrovascular conditions.

Sellers has been a nurse for 34 years, starting her career as a staff nurse on a neuroscience inpatient floor. She obtained her bachelor's degree in nursing from Neumann University in Aston, Pa. After completing her master's degree at the University of Pennsylvania, she worked as a clinical nurse specialist for the Department of Neurosurgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She recently received her doctor of nursing practice at West Chester University. Currently, she is the director of the NeuroRescue Program for the University of Pennsylvania Health System, coordinating the UPHS telestroke program as well as NeruoRescue transfers.
