VENTNOR The city has announced it will hold its annual Memorial Day weekend Opening of the Beach ceremony 8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 27 on the beach at Suffolk Avenue. Also in store for those who attend is a tour of the new Beach Patrol Headquarters building situated on the boardwalk at Suffolk Avenue.

The new 1,315-square-foot, two-story structure mimics the design of the recently upgraded Ventnor City Pier and offers some consistency in the design of Ventnor's public buildings. The grey and white building was designed by William McLees Architecture and erected by R. Wilkinson & Sons Construction, Inc. at a cost of $755,000. The building stands in the footprint of the old headquarters but offers more amenities for lifeguards and is 2 feet above base flood elevation.

The old building, which was built by the Public Works Department, was no longer repairable, the roof leaked and the electrical system failed making it unsafe for employees.

The footprint of the structure is still 600-square feet, but it is now two stories tall. It has administrative offices, a first aid station, lockers and rest rooms with showers, a radio center and a general meeting room that can be used for training.
