LONGPORT American Legion Post 469 is continuing its ongoing effort to keep members of the already close-knit community well connected, not only to the community, but to each other as well.

The Legion is currently in the throes of compiling information to be included in the 53rd edition of its annual Longport Directory, which lists names, addresses and phone numbers of Longport residents. Included in the directory is critical information provided by borough officials, including flood hazard safety tips, emergency contact numbers, trash and recycling regulations, dates for community events and other notices that keep residents informed.

The Legion took over publication of the directory from the Church of the Redeemer Men's Fellowship in 1971 after the church group relinquished responsibility for the directory it started in 1957.

The Legion distributes the directory before the July 4 holiday each year to more than 1,600 households at no cost to residents. Local businesses and residents are encouraged to purchase space in the directory to promote their business or become a boosting sponsor.

Funds raised support various Legion activities, patriotic services and celebrations during the year, such as the Memorial Day, 911 Remembrance Day, Veterans Day and the Legion's Wounded Warrior Week, during which a deserving wounded warrior and his/her family are treated to a weeklong, all expenses paid vacation at the Jersey Shore. The Legion also provides monetary awards to the winners of the Constitution Essay Contest and Character and Citizenship Awards presented to graduates of the Margate City public schools.

The American Legion Post 469 was established in the 1950s by a group of World War II veterans who live in Longport. The Post home remains headquartered in Longport and is actively engaged in the community.

Anyone interested in advertising in the publication or becoming a boosting sponsor is encouraged to get in touch with Post Commander Larry Pacentrilli at [email protected].
