Therapeutic horticulture benefits Seashore Gardens seniors

  • Atlantic County

Residents at Seashore Gardens had a chance to see the transformation of lip balm mixture as it was prepared.

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP - Seniors made peppermint lip balm in their December Golden Sunflowers group at Seashore Gardens Living Center. The seniors used a bee's wax base, and residents learned about all the qualities of the wax and how it differs from petroleum lip balm.

Golden Sunflowers is a therapeutic gardening group that meets regularly at the center. The benefits of therapeutic horticulture are numerous and include social interaction, improving motor skills, elevating mood, reducing agitation, and improving self-esteem.

The Golden Sunflowers program is funded by Seashore Gardens Foundation, which promotes and enhances services and programs that enrich elder lives.

Assistant Director of Recreation Cindy Weinraub presents the finished product to residents.

Residents mixed the ingredients for their seasonal lip balms.
