Barking dogs are disturbing neighbors in Longport.
LONGPORT Your barking dog may be disturbing the peace in the quiet hamlet of Longport Borough.
According to Administrator A. Scott Porter, the borough has been receiving reports of dogs being left alone in their backyards for extended periods of time and barking non-stop when people pass by or when another animal is in the area.
As you can imagine, depending on the time of day, day of the week and amount of activity, this can be disruptive of the peace and tranquility of the neighborhood, he stated in the memo to residents posted on the borough's website.
Because visitors come to Longport to enjoy the beach, biking, meeting friends and relatives, or simply sitting on the front porch enjoying the summer breezes, Porter is asking residents to bring their pets indoors so they don't disturb neighbors.
He cited local ordinance Chapter 116-4, A(4) that regulates animals that make noise that disturbs the comfort, repose, peace or quiet of persons residing in the vicinity.
Violations carry a maximum $1,000 fine, 90 days in jail or both.
We, as owners of animals, need to be mindful of our pets and not allow them to disturb others on a continuous basis, he wrote.
