Longport announces Summer Author Series, community events

LONGPORT The Longport Public Library will be screening the hit movie, 80 For Brady, starring Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno and Sally Field, 2 p.m. Friday, May 5. The screening, held in Council Chambers, includes free popcorn. See trailer below.

The library, which took over operations at the Longport Historical Society Museum next door, will premier its latest exhibit focusing on the history of the borough during its 125th anniversary year, titled, Longport Memories.

Walk through the museum and learn about the old homes, Betty Bacharach Rehabilitation Hospital for Children, the iconic Church of the Redeemer and the museum building, which once served as a U.S. Coast Guard Station and Borough Hall. The public is welcome to attend starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 20, which also marks the opening of the Porch Store, which sells popular Longport swag.

The library is planning an art program focusing on drawing with charcoals 2 p.m. Friday, May 26. Learn how to work with charcoals using light and shadows to create a 3-D appearance and capture textures and perspective.

The first event in the Longport Public Library author series will see former resident Ellen Cohen discussing her now deceased husband Michael Cohen's historical perspective of Longport, The Way We Were, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 23.

Cohen's book provides a look back at the storied history of Absecon Island's southernmost municipality. It includes pictures and words about the borough's cultural heritage, including major storms, famous people and architectural marvels.

Other authors visiting the library this summer include Marie and Victoria Christopher Murray co-authors of The First Ladies, and The Personal Librarian, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 11; and Lisa Scottoline, author of Look Again, Loyalty, Don't Go, and Save Me, 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 17.

The first concert of the season will be held 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 30 in Commission Chambers and feature Atlantic Brass. The concert season will end 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 with a concert on the beach at 33rd Avenue and a celebratory bonfire.

As with most programs at the library, Longport residents are first to register their attendance by calling the library at 609-487-7403. Residents of other communities can register after the local resident cut off date.

The library is located inside Borough Hall, 2305 Atlantic Ave.
