Josh Cutler
GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP Executive Director of the Board of Jewish Education in Atlantic and Cape May Counties Josh Cutler will speak Thursday, Oct. 26 at The Alliance Heritage Center of Stockton University about South Jersey's Jewish farming communities and historic synagogues. The talk will be held 7-9 p.m. in Room F-111 at Stockton University, 101 Vera King Farris Dr.
Throughout history, the Garden State has been a haven for Jewish immigrants fleeing persecution and antisemitism. During waves of immigration from Europe, synagogue life evolved, diverged and occasionally recreated itself, adjusting to the demographic it needed to serve. Historic synagogues are spread over five counties in Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem. Some are converted barn structures amid chicken farms.
Cutler, who is working to obtain his Ph.D. in Holocaust and Genocide Studies, received a master's degree from Stockton, focusing on Holocaust survivors and the impact synagogues had on survivors.
The program is funded with a grant from the Mellon Foundation.
