ATLANTIC CITY - After a three-year hiatus due to COVID-19, Stockton University Coast Day returns on Friday, Oct. 20 on the Atlantic City campus.
The public education and outreach event is an opportunity for Stockton University's marine scientists to share coastal zone knowledge and research with the community, said Susanne Moskalski, associate professor of Marine Science.
It is very important to us in the Marine Science program to share our expertise and research with others, rather than keeping it within the academic and scientific communities, she said.
Some of the displays presented by the eight members of Stockton faculty and staff include a wave flume demonstration and a session on how to cast lines for fishing. They will join 13 other exhibitors focused on the theme of coastal change, conservation and resilience. Some of those exhibitors include the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, Cape May Whale Watch, the American Littoral Society and the Barnegat Bay Partnership.
The day will start at 9 a.m. in the Fannie Lou Hamer Event Center with visits by local high school students who will be given a lesson about sea level rise and storm surge and how it applies locally. Then at noon the event will open to the general public.
Coast Day will showcase coastal zone research and activities by Stockton University faculty, staff and students. Meet local experts on fisheries, wetlands, birds and beaches, and join in activities to inspire young and old alike.
Admission is free, and Coast Day will happen regardless of the weather conditions or coastal flooding status. For more information, go to stockton.edu/coastday.
