MARGATE – An alleged impaired driver sustained non-life threatening injuries in a single-vehicle accident Wednesday night, police said in a release.
The Margate City Police Department is investigating the crash that occurred approximately 11:15 p.m. July 31 at the intersection of Jerome and Winchester avenues.
Police and fire crews responded to the scene after receiving several 911 calls from residents who heard a loud noise when the car struck a utility pole.
When Officers arrived on scene, they discovered that a white Acura travelling westbound on Winchester Avenue left the roadway at the intersection with Jerome Avenue and struck the traffic light pole and a utility pole before coming to rest on the sidewalk. The utility pole was severed in half and caused live wires to fall to the ground.
The driver of the Acura, identified as Joseph P. Shea, 37, of Bridgeton, was evaluated on scene and taken to Atlantic Care Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
An officer accompanied ambulance personnel to the hospital to obtain a blood specimen after Shea exhibited signs of impairment, the release stated. Officers also discovered drug paraphernalia and what appeared to be a controlled dangerous substance located in Shea’s vehicle.
Multiple city and county utility companies assisted with the cleanup and restoration of power to the area.
The crash remains under investigation and criminal charges, including driving while intoxicated and other motor vehicle violations are pending. The crash is being investigated by Officer Joseph Szapor of the Margate City Police Department.
