MAYS LANDING – As the school year approaches, it may be time for young people to consider some rewarding after school activities that build skills and career exploration.
Students interested in aviation mays consider joining the Civil Air Patrol Squadron that meets at the George L. Hess School, 700 Babcock Rd. in Mays Landing. The group meets 6-8:45pm Monday evenings. The annual registration fee is $45 for a cadets, ages 12 and older.
The program provides aerospace education, flying an airplane alongside a certified pilot, and reinforcing STEM concepts, including satellite telemetry, cyber security, engineering, electronics and drone technology.
As the official auxilliary of the U.S Air Force, cadets will learn ceremony drills, how to wear a military style uniform, leadership and followership, and public speaking. Cadets become eligible to for up to two extra ranks should they decide to enlist in the military.
Cadets will also learn air and ground search and rescue operations and at the age of 16 can be activated to participate in real world search and rescue or disaster relief missions, helping to protect and serve their community.
Civil Air Patrol, which has been in existence since WWII, prepares cadets for service in the military and the workforce.
