LONGPORT – Mayor Nicholas Russo and Commissioner Jim Leeds, who have each served on the Board of Commissioners for the last 16 years, presided over their last meeting Wednesday, Dec. 18. A new commission will be seated after the New Year.

The new board will include Commissioner Dan Lawler, who was elected to his fifth term on Nov. 5, will be sworn-in alongside businessman Jim Ulmer, who ran unsuccessfully in 2020, and newcomer Patrick Armstrong, who currently serves as a volunteer firefighter in Longport and is Deputy Fire Chief in Margate.

Russo and Leeds received accolades from staff and members of the public.

Resident Bob English, who maintained a steady presence at board meetings, often questioning their actions and offering alternative viewpoints on issues affecting the borough and its taxpayers, thanked them for their many years of public service.

“I know how difficult it can be dealing with guys like me every month,” he said.

Leeds said he is looking forward to spending more time in warmer climes, but promised to show up occasionally at meetings.

“I really enjoyed my time up here,” he said. “I totally enjoyed it.”

Russo, who was recently appointed Flotilla Commander for the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary in Ocean City, said his work with the organization will consume much of his time in the coming years.

“I’m looking forward to continuing the auxiliary’s mission to support our active duty Coast Guard members,” he said.

Russo said he is also anticipating enjoying more train travel across the U.S. and spending more time with his family.

The reorganization meeting will be held at noon Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025 in Commission Chambers at Longport Borough Hall, 2305 Atlantic Ave.
