Approximately 5,500 water meters will be replaced in Margate.
MARGATE - City officials reported last week that the first phase of a multi-year project to replace aging water meters has been completed at a cost of $211,016, and the city will begin Phase 2 of the project in the coming weeks.
Phase 2 will consist of installing approximately 1,800 new water meters and radio transmitters at homes, which will take approximately 30 minutes to install under normal circumstances. The water supply will be shut off during installation and all of the work will be done at the water meter pit usually located near the curb in front of the house.
VEPO Solutions New York was contracted to do the work and will have proper credentials with them at all times.
The project is being undertaken because the city's water meters have exceeded their 20-year life expectancy by four years, and many of them are broken or in poor condition.
The new meters are more energy efficient and allow meter readings to be conducted remotely, which is a cost-effective way to record usage that results in accurate billing. They will also aid in the detection of leaks and provide easy access to data for customer questions.
