VENTNOR Downbeach.com is seeking recommendations to give last night's wind, rainstorm a name. Perhaps Kismet, Destiny, Felix or Venturi all mean luck or good fortune.
Downbeach towns experienced the normal inconveniences due to minor to moderate flooding in low-lying areas, and coastal flooding will continue today. The highest water levels will occur late this morning into early afternoon, according to the National Weather Service Mt. Holly.
A wind advisory continues with west winds of up to 25-miles-per-hour, and gusts up to 60 mph for coastal areas. Another storm is approaching Friday and may produce as much as 1.5 inches of rain on top of an already saturated South Jersey.
Ventnor Mayor Lance Landgraf was out early this morning and reported that despite howling winds, there were no major power outages to report, and minor flooding in areas that are typically affected during storms, such as Derby, Edgewater, Surrey and Monmouth, Fremont and Fulton avenues.
I drove the city this a.m. and will be getting further reports from (Public Works Superintendent) Rick Santoro as the day continues, he said in an email.
Landgraf said stormwater pump stations were up and running throughout the storm with no issues.
I have not been on the beach yet, but the tide was at the dunes at the Pier, he said.
City Hall did experience some leaks due to the wind-driven rain, but those issues will be quickly resolved, he said.
Longport Mayor Nicholas Russo said there were a few signs blown down in a several locations and normal flooding in the usual locations. Public Works supervisors are out checking for beach erosion.
Thank goodness no fires broke out. The winds were really strong here, he said.
A construction project to erect a raised crosswalk on Amherst Avenue, which was slated to begin on Wednesday, has been postposed, and will start on Monday, Jan. 15.
Mayor Michael Collins said it was a relatively quiet night in Margate.
We had our typical instances of debris in the streets, covered storm drains and sand on the beach ends, he said. Public Works is in the process of taking care of all of that.
Several streetlights that went out on Atlantic Avenue have been restored.
We had minor flooding, which is again typical of any storm that hits us. Overall, we were very lucky.
