MARGATE - For generations, students have been tested to apply knowledge they learn throughout their years of education to develop into well-rounded individuals fluent in literature, science and history.  But what if there were high school courses focused on, say, dietary nutrition, the student loan process or even how to start your own business - real world topics with practical applications, available to any student?

The Margate Business Association Daniel and Maria Walters Scholarship Program is challenging students to provide insight into how a novel course of study not currently being instructed today would be beneficial to students and why it would be a valuable addition to the school curriculum. The top two student essays will each be awarded a $2,500 college scholarship.

The 2024 scholarship application is now available to download from the margatehasmore.com website and through high school guidance offices. The scholarship is open to Margate and Longport resident high school students who attended Margate City schools.  The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, April 16.

Students will be asked to write a 250-300 word essay detailing the basic content of the new course being offered and its benefits to both the student and the school. Adult references, a list of schools attended, and community service activities the applicant participated in, will also be part of the application. Essay judges will not know the identity of the applicants and winners will be announced in June.

Since 1999, the scholarship program has awarded over $125,000 to local students attending institutions of higher learning.  Daniel and Maria Walters were both educators in the Greater Egg Harbor Regional School District and began the program as a way to give back to the community. The program, in part, is also supported by funds raised through MBA's annual Wine Tasting event. This year's 21st annual event will be held Friday July 26 at the Edgmar Circle field near Huntington Avenue.
