Former Ventnor mayor to share history of library through the years

Atlantic County Library/Ventnor By NANETTE LoBIONDO GALLOWAY VENTNOR – The city’s Historical Society is inviting the public attend a special informational session on the history of the library 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 30 at the Ventnor Historical Museum located in the Cultural Arts Center and next to the Atlantic County Library Ventnor, 6500 Atlantic Ave. Former Ventnor City Mayor and Historical Society member Tim Kreischer will speak about how libraries play an important role in communities, offer space for reading, research, educational programs, and historical artifacts, and provide meeting space for social and community organizations. Kreischer will speak about the origin of the library, its original location, its temporary home after the 1940 fire and the March Storm of 1962, and the expansion in 2004. Additional information on the pier pavilion, the Newport Avenue site, the Cultural Arts Center building and ice-skating rink will be included. Guest presenters include:
  • Longtime Ventnor resident Mary Lou Reiff, who will share insights about attending many events at the library and pier pavilion
  • Longtime Ventnor resident and former City Commissioner Albie Battaglia, who lived across from the Newport Avenue site and has great recollections of that site before the library was built
  • Library architect Marty Blumberg, who will give his perspective on designing the building.
