Gov. Phil Murphy may be forced to replace New Jersey's Bob Menendez in Senate after his corruption conviction

  • State

Menendez has refused to resign since he was indicted last September and is now facing a prison sentence and the possibility of expulsion from the Senate.

If Menendez won’t step down following his conviction on federal bribery charges, his colleagues in the Senate are ready to force him out. Sen. Cory Booker says he’ll be at the forefront of the effort to remove him.

"He must stand up now and leave the Senate, and if he refuses to do that, many of us ... and I will lead that effort to make sure he's removed from the Senate," Booker said.

A two-thirds vote would be needed to expel Menendez.

The 70-year-old Democrat is facing decades in prison.

Andy Kim, the Democratic U.S. Representative from New Jersey, leads polls regarding Menendez's successor in the Senate.
