A 45-minute rainstorm flooded streets in the Downbeach area Thursday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service Mt. Holly, thunderstorms and showers were forecasted across South Jersey through the evening hours and were expected to bring high winds, heavy downpours and waterspouts across the back bay areas.
That’s just what Downbeach communities experienced around 3 p.m. Thursday, July 25. The storm brough localized flooding to low-lying areas in Ventnor, Margate and Longport.
“The storm drains just can’t handle that amount of rain pumping into the bay,” Ventnor Commissioner of Public Works Landgraf said at the Ventnor Board of Commissioners meeting held 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
He said there was major street flooding in the Fulton Avenue area, which is slated for storm sewer upgrades.
Meteorologist Joe Martucci said Downbeach rain gauges had yet to report readings, but the Atlantic City Marina reported .23 inches of rain and Ocean City reported. .38 inches.
The Margate City Fire Department was out surveying areas and sent some photos of the flooding to Downbeach.com.
A local resident who often posts live on Facebook was out encouraging vehicles to drive faster through flood waters. Of course, residents who live in low-lying areas that have repeated flooding and Emergency Management Officials in all Downbeach communities frown on motorists creating wakes that can cause homes to experience flooding unnecessarily.
Do not drive through or walk through flood waters, the NWS advised. Turn around, don’t drown.
Weather officials advise residents to be alert for changing conditions through the rest of the day.
“If you hear thunder, seek shelter indoors until the storm passes,” the NWS advises.
